Description Marcin Mirosław 2010-12-21 22:47:41 UTC
I get kernel panic when booting with sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.36-r{4,5}. Last working kernel, at this host, is gentoo-sources-2.6.36-r1.
Little summary:
working configuration - gentoo-sources-2.6.36-r1 with gcc version 4.5.1 (Gentoo 4.5.1 p1.1, pie-0.4.5)

not working: gentoo-sources-2.6.36-r4 - gcc version 4.5.1 (Gentoo 4.5.1-r1 p1.3, pie-0.4.5)
gentoo-sources-2.6.36-r5 - gcc version 4.5.1 (Gentoo 4.5.1-r1 p1.3, pie-0.4.5) and gcc version 4.4.5 (Gentoo 4.4.5 p1.1, pie-0.4.5)

I can't try gentoo-sources-2.6.36-r1 with gcc-4.4 because this kernel is removed from tree.

Reproducible: Always

kernel panic - printscreen
Comment 4 Marcin Mirosław 2010-12-21 22:59:09 UTC
Similar problem is in this forum thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-856231.html
Comment 5 Marcin Mirosław 2010-12-22 08:51:40 UTC
The same problem with sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-2.6.36.2 and gcc-4.4.5/gcc-4.5.1-r1. Probably it's nothing to do for Gentoo Team.
Comment 6 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2010-12-29 13:33:55 UTC
Can you try the latest 2.6.37_rc kernel (git-sources) and tell us if it fails the same way?

Would you be able to do a git bisect between vanilla-sources-2.6.36.1 and vanilla-soruces-2.6.32.2 (Which I think are your last good and first bad kernels) ?

Comment 7 Marcin Mirosław 2010-12-29 20:31:32 UTC
It's going to be very interesting. Any kernel panics. I tested vanilla-sources from 2.6.34,35,37 and git 2.6.37, all of them panics. I;m going to test diffrent verison of gcc (with diffrent USE flags).
Comment 8 Marcin Mirosław 2010-12-29 20:57:36 UTC
I tried gcc-4.1.2 & gentoo-sources-2.6.36-r6 . Bug still appears, i have no idea what could be reason and where looking for it.
Comment 9 Marcin Mirosław 2011-01-02 19:49:36 UTC
I tried gcc:4.4 too, kernel panic still appears. The only one kernel that works correctly is hardened-source. Compiled with gcc-4.5.2 boots correctly.

This config change works for me.

Comment 11 Marcin Mirosław 2011-01-03 17:12:18 UTC
I can confirm it. I've turn off RELOCATABLE, kernel boots without problem.
Comment 12 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2011-02-01 16:01:10 UTC
It's good a workaround worked for you, we will follow the upstream bug and back port any fix identified.
Comment 13 Aidan Marks 2011-02-12 22:41:56 UTC
Setting CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START=0x100000 on an Intel DH55TC board worked for me.
