Description Kevin O'Gorman 2010-12-16 20:59:08 UTC
Compilation fails. Note: the same gcc-4.4.4-r2 has just build the 3.4 stable slot, and all of the 4.x stable slots with no trouble.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge -a sys-devel-gcc:3.2
2.
3.

Are you able to build gcc-3.2.3-r4 with older versions of gcc? It is unlikely that gcc maintains total backward compatibility.
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2010-12-17 21:48:42 UTC
more likely the problem is the version of bison

Apparently not.

I switched to gcc-3.4.6 (which I had compiled with 4.4.4), and had it compile itself (with success). Then I had it try compiling gcc:3.2, with the result
that it failed in the middle of c-parse.yy, which is consistent with a problem
with the version of bison. Not sure what to do now. It has become moot for me anyway, since my original motive was to get a compiler that would build the current stable qemu. I gave up on that and built qemu-0.10 manually with gcc:4.4 with good results, and am awaiting the development of an ebuild to make
it "official". In for a penny, I may just jump to the current upstream qemu-0.13 and stay there if it works.

In any event, details follow.

This patch should fix it for >=bison-2.4. At least gcc-3.2.3-r4 compiled successfully for me using gcc-3.4.6-r2.

i'd like to have a record of where this is coming from. a patch from upstream svn would be best ...

Here is a reference to the bison mailing-list, which describes the problem:

Comment 12 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2011-12-06 03:35:28 UTC
ive queued the patch for 3.4.6 and 3.3.6. the 3.2.x ebuilds need redoing for the toolchain eclass before it can use a patchset.
