After I start playing a video with gnome-mplayer it crashes and prints this message to the terminal (when I run through terminal): >(gnome-mplayer:26944): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_ascii_strncasecmp: assertion `s1 != NULL' failed I tried unmasking and compiling dev-libs/glib-2.24.2 and rebooting, thinking that it was a problem in glib that was fixed. The problem still occurs. I compiled gnome-mplayer with the -ggdb compile flag and repeated the crash. But when I run gnome-mplayer I can't get a backtrace since gnome-mplayer don't close. It stays in a locked state.
I've discovered that gnome-mplayer locks up only when the sound is muted.

I had completely forgotten about this bug report. gnome-mplayer-1.0.3 works fine.
