Tab switching and tab closure are both slow erratic operations.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.  Click on a tab
2.  Click on a new tab


Actual Results:  
Tab changing is slow, about 4-5 seconds or so, and the highlighted tab isn't in sync with the currently displayed tab

Expected Results:  
Tab changing would be smooth, even if slow, and changing which tab is highlighted should really be a short operation.

This happens even on few tabs with small buffers attached to them.
