This:
Change "stage3" to "stage2" or "stage1" if you want to start from those stages
instead.
# tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/gentoo/stage3-*.tar.bz2

Should be this:

Change "stage3" to "stage2" or "stage1" if you want to start from those stages
instead.
# tar -xvjpf /cdrom/stages/stage3-*.tar.bz2

Using gentoo-sparc-1.4_rc5.iso unless there is something newer that I missed, in
that case ignore this if it matches the CD layout.

I'll check what the situation is, and if this is valid, ask that the newer LiveCDs have the stages at the same location. It is best for all of us that all LiveCDs, independent of the architecture, use the same convention for the files.

The sparc and x86 livecds will be built the same way (using catalyst) for the next release. I'm marking this one as FIXED then.
