During emerge configure:

Apparently we should switch from autotools to WAF for this package

Yes, we are aware of this, but there is no reason to switch to waf build system. It is in our view inferior to what autotools provides us and there is little to gain since upstream is not really active on this anymore and bindings will be replaced in the nearish future by gobject-introspection based bindings.
