Description Volker 2010-12-03 08:12:17 UTC
I am not able to power on any guest system.

It does not matter if it is an existing or a newly created virtual machine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. start vmware workstation
2. create a new virtual machine and use it or select an existing one
3. press the green play button and wait.
4. after a while an error message pop up: "Unable to change virtual machine power state: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to"
Actual Results:
not able to start virtual machines

Expected Results:
being able to start virtual machines

There is no vmware-workstation-7.1.X on portage. If this is from an external overlay please contact the maintainers of that overlay

Comment 9 Volker 2010-12-03 16:11:08 UTC
Have removed overlay vmware and downgraded to the in tree version app-emulation/vmware-workstation-6.5.4.246459

The result is completely the same and I get again the message "Unable to change virtual machine power state: Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to"

vmware.log from the virtual machine directory
Comment 13 Harris Landgarten 2010-12-03 18:22:00 UTC
Look in the directory when the actual vm is. You will most likely see .lck files there. Delete them and that should fix the issue
Comment 14 Volker 2010-12-03 19:12:26 UTC
You are right there are two directories with the extension 'lck'

I have deleted both, unfortunately the error has not changed and is still preventing me from powering on the virtual machines.
Comment 15 Volker 2010-12-04 12:06:58 UTC
Today I have updated the system with the packages listed within the package.lst attachment. After update and a system reboot the vmware virtual machines are able to boot.

So I do not know exactly what is happen, but now all virtual machines are working well and it seams that the problem is not longer harming me.
