Description William Dillon 2003-11-29 20:24:05 UTC
While trying to install Gentoo on an HP9000 715 the system crashes.
First, I tried to build a system using the Stage 1 tarball, during builf of the
bootstrap the system became unresponsive, and the heartbeat stopped beating.

Then, I tried to use the Stage 3 tarball and while tar was expanding the archive
the system crashed again.

A third attempt befalled the same fate.

I feel that the crash had little to do with a specific program but maybe with
the filesystem (probably reiserfs).

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot the system with the Beta 3 or 4 LiveCD
2. Initialize a root and boot partition with reiserfs
3. Basically follow the hppa install directions on gentoo.org for either stage

Actual Results:
Standard results that I would expect for a sucessful install

Expected Results:
The install not to crash :)
-or- more indication that reiserfs is still in testing for hppa

I tried to use a reiserfs partition only with my portage directory in it and everytime I make many access to this partition (emerge sync) my box crash too.
Reiserfs is barely tested on hppa. can you try the installation with a ext3 fs ?

Btw, when you use reiserfs, do you have HPMC message on your serial console or on your screen ?

As far as I have tested etx3 is stable on the target macines.

I have not yet built a complete gentoo system on the machine,
but that is does not indicate that the filesystem has not been
under stress.

This is then a reiserfs bug.
Perhaps 2.6 series works better with reiserfs. At least the module loads fine on my test box.
I'll no more include reiserfs support on 2.4 livecd. I'll see for 2.6.
