As the previous bug report https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=304765 gnome wont mount ntfs using ntfs-3g (according to gconf-editor settings). It use kernel ntfs support (also if is not enabled). Enabling +udev USE in ntfs-3g package works very well for me. So, can you please add this USE to gnome profile for that package? Otherwise maybe put some warning about in post-inst of ntfs-3g can help. Thanks Reproducible: Always
I think sys-fs/ntfs3g should probably enable "udev" USE flag by default since, from my point of view, ntfs3g should try to get used when possible since I think people installing it will want to get it used as much as possible
gnome-mount is deprecated along with gnome-vfs, if you have a package still depending on it, please bug the upstream of the package so they move to gio. That still won't solve the ntfs-3g vs. kernel ntfs issue but people working on the stack know the problem and last I checked decided to change nothing. Maybe we could solve the problem in gentoo with an eselect module ?
Re-reading bug #304765 and this bug's original complaint, I have no opinion on enabling udev use flag in gnome profile, I don't think this is something for gnome to set since I consider users should already have it enabled on platforms where it is available.
sorry I didn't want to remove gnome herd. Anyway following up on my previous comment, I remembered that gnome-mount uses hal helpers for mounting so you need to have both hal and udev tricks enabled if you want both gnome-mount and gvfs based programs to be able to mount stuff :)
If udev USE should already be enabled, it's not a good idea to add this USE to one of these profiles 10.0 || desktop ?
sys-fs/ntfs3g-2010.10.2 now enables the udev USE flag by default.
