Description Richard 2010-11-20 03:44:36 UTC
x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.2.901 introduced random lag issues on both my amd64 desktop and my x86 laptop. The systems are using GeForce GTS 250 and GeForce Go 7900 GS graphics cards respectively, with the nvidia binary driver.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.2.901
2. Install x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers
3. Use the system. Within 72 hours, it will freeze and/or crash.

=x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.2.901 introduced random lag issues on both my amd64 desktop and my x86 laptop. The systems are using GeForce GTS 250 and GeForce Go 7900 GS graphics cards respectively, with the nvidia binary driver.

With =x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-260.19.12, I would observe random freezes that permanently impaired my systems. Pings from the network would have latencies on the order of 500 ms when normal latencies would typically be less than 1 ms and if the systems were left alone in this state long enough, they would reboot. After upgrading to =x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-260.19.21, those freezes became temporary, lasting approximately 10 seconds at a time.

Downgrading to =x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.2 fixed the issues. I have masked x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.2.901 on both of my machines.

It is worth mentioning that after the x11-base/xorg-server-1.9.2.901 upgrade, I installed the new kernel responsiveness patch:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-853085.html

With that patch in place, I would have crashes/freezes every several hours. After installing the new nvidia drivers, I suspected that the patch was causing the problem, so I disabled it. Doing that made the freezes occur every second. Then downgrading fixed everything and all freezes appear to be gone. I then re-enabled the patch, which seems to make X11 applications became more fluidly.

Please post emerge --info
Does this problem only happen with nvidia-drivers or also with xf86-video-{nouveau,nv}? If you are using kernel 2.6.36, does this happen with older kernels too?
Comment 2 Richard 2010-11-21 13:51:36 UTC
I am using kernel 2.6.35.8 and I have only used the nvidia-drivers. I am not sure how to switch back and forth from nvidia's binary to nouveau without having some sort of conflict.
