ok, and if I remove -fomit-frame-pointer and -pipe from my cflags, it also fails but with anoter error ..

Looking over similar errors popping up on Google, it seems this can be triggered by an arch or CHOST change. Did you make any changes to make.conf in those areas?
Comment 3 Florent D'halluin (Flal) 2010-11-14 20:29:35 UTC
Nope, I set up CHOST and march flags right at the install and never touched it since then ..
Comment 4 Paweł Hajdan, Jr. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-11-15 08:56:55 UTC
Please post the full build log. Does it fail the same way every time you compile it?

This version of chromium and gcc has been arch-tested and marked stable on x86, so I'm very surprised that it's generating compile failures and ICEs.
Comment 5 Florent D'halluin (Flal) 2010-11-15 10:41:53 UTC
Ok, I just tried to recompile it (with the same flags (-march, useless -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe) than first time) and it worked this time.. Can't test it over ssh, but I'll considered it fixed.

This is really weird anyway.
Can't it be a memory issue ? (I launched compilation over ssh, with no current gnome session opened this time) google warns that compiling chromium requires a lot of memory. It is strange though cause I have 4G of memory..

I think that you can get "ld returned 1 exit status" when it runs our of memory or disk space. That might explain the intermittent nature of this problem.

On my VM I have about 1.5 GB RAM + 2 GB of swap and chromium compiles fine. However, the more memory you have the faster it will link.
