Description Chris Smith 2010-11-13 23:25:28 UTC
I'm only documenting this, it's fixed on my system

 I upgraded acroread to 9.4.
 Running it yields
Pango-WARNING **: failed to choose a font, expect ugly output. engine type='PangoRenderFc', script='latin'
The pdf rendering is fine, but its own chars are drawn as square or hollow boxes.

The fix is to delete or rename ~/.adobe and restart acroread.
