Whenever I shutdown or restart my system from GNOME, I can observe that gdm gets restarted while the shutdown process is going and then it gets killed and the computer shuts down. I'm using the nvidia proprietary driver, so whenever gdm gets loaded/unloaded this translates to horrifying flickering. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Press shutdown (or restart) from GNOME. Actual Results: GNOME shuts down. The screen goes black. The console content is shown. The screen goes black. The gdm login manager begins to load. The screen goes black. the console content is shown. the computer is powered down. Expected Results: GNOME shuts down. Screen goes black. Console content appears. Computer powers down.
I did not mention that this beahaviour slows down considerably the shutdown process, because of the console->xorg transition (and viceversa) that on nvidia is very slow.
what versions of gdm are affected ?
(In reply to comment #2) > what versions of gdm are affected ? > Right now I'm seeing this with 2.32 and I'm pretty sure 2.28 did the same thing, although I can't confirm that because it fails to build.
I am sure of seeing this even with gdm-2.20 since a lot of time :-/
I can confirm the same problem with 2.20 and 2.28.
same here 2.20.11
This will need to be fixed by upstream and, then, we will try to backport the patch if possible
I may add that I'm not able to reproduce this bug anymore with gdm-3
(In reply to comment #8) > I may add that I'm not able to reproduce this bug anymore with gdm-3 For me, it happens every time with gdm-3.0.4
(In reply to comment #9) > For me, it happens every time with gdm-3.0.4 Then maybe it's because I'm using the SystemD init daemon now.
