Description Daniel Nilsson 2010-11-07 08:35:35 UTC
rsync2.se.gentoo.org (94.246.101.6 aka sv2.parabol.com) has been down for over two weeks now. It doesn't even respond to ping.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
emerge --sync

Actual Results:
rsync error: received SIGINT, SIGTERM, or SIGHUP (code 20) at rsync.c(543) [Receiver=3.0.7]
timed out

I'm using the se.gentoo.org rotation and right now two out of the three mirrors are bad. (I'm posting about the other bad mirror in a separate bug).

You are correct. I have removed this mirror from the rotation, and I am CC'ing the admin so they can look into the problem.

I handed the responsibilities for this mirror for about a month ago.

The organization (MDFNET) wanted this mirror to be hosted in house again. (It was moved by me to an external hosting facility for about 2 years ago due to lack of interest from the organization). Now apparently they had a person willing to take over and maintain this mirror and since they own the domain (mirror.mdfnet.se) I didn't opposed their descision.

I told them you get in touch with the gentoo mirror admins to get this DNS updated by apparently that information got lost somewhere in the conversation.

The new admin's email are feffe [at] mdfnet.se

Thanks. I have sent an email to the new admin.

Sorry about the mess here.

The server is up and running at:
mirror.mdfnet.se
193.11.112.131
2001:6b0:30:1000:112:131:0:1

at the moment it's syncing just once a day to ftp.ussg.iu.edu::gentoo-distfiles for distfiles and rsync://rsync3.se.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage for the portage tree, but if you mail me the mirrors to sync to I'll update it ASAP.

Again, sorry for the mess, I really need to keep better track of my todo-list...

Please read the following docs:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/source_mirrors.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/rsync.xml

And also provide us the following information for the new box:
* Official mirror name (preferably not your hostname, but the name of your organization)
* Mirror type: distfiles/releases, gentoo-portage. NOTE: gentoo-portage is always rsync only. Some mirrors may have rsync for distfiles as well. Do not be confused by the difference!
* URLs: full protocol and path for release/distfile mirrors, hostname or IP for gentoo-portage mirrors
* Hardware specifications
* Bandwidth specifications (transfer speed, eg 100Mbit, and any limits you may have)
* Location
I* ntended concurrent users (for each protocol, mirror type)

Organisation name is Mälardalens Datorförening

It is intended to be both portage rsync mirror and http/ftp source mirror.

Portage mirror: rsync://mirror.mdfnet.se/gentoo-portage
source mirror: http://mirror.mdfnet.se/gentoo/ and ftp://mirror.mdfnet.se/gentoo/

mirror.mdfnet.se is a virtual machine running on a server with a W3520 Xeon processor at 2.67GHz. The virtual machine has access to 2 cores, 512MB memory and a dedicated 100Mbit link (and no traffic limit). The server is located in Västerås / Sweden.

At the moment the max connections are set to 20 for the rsync server and 30 for ftp. There is currently no limit for http (afaik. lighttpd will try to serve until it runs out of file descriptors). I intend to monitor the server and adjust these limits when I see how much traffic/load it gets.

Please let me know if there is anything else you need or if you have any concerns.

Thanks for the info. I have put your server into our monitoring system so we
can check it for the next 2 weeks. If everything looks okay, you will be put
into the official rotation.
Comment 8 Theo Chatzimichos (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2010-11-12 11:15:58 UTC
Our monitoring tool reported the following:
"Could not get Releases timestamp for ftp://mirror.mdfnet.se/gentoo"
Please make sure that releases/.test/timestamp.x exists and is accessible. Thanks
Comment 9 Fredrik Eriksson 2010-11-12 17:17:37 UTC
Fixed, pure-ftpd was configured to not allow access to dotfiles.
Comment 10 Theo Chatzimichos (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2010-11-26 09:44:07 UTC
Thanks for helping out Gentoo.

For rsync:
I have added the IP you specified in the bug to our access database, please start syncing to masterportage.gentoo.org per our rsync document at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/rsync.xml. Please also monitor http://mirrorstats.gentoo.org/rsync as this application is used to keep track of the up-to-date nature of our mirrors. You are mirror rsync(number).$country.gentoo.org in the rsync.$country.gentoo.org rotation and have been added to the rsync.$continent.gentoo.org rotation as well.

For distfiles:
I have added your mirror to our list at http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors2.xml. Please start syncing from masterdistfiles.gentoo.org as the email I have sent to you instructs. Please also monitor http://mirrorstats.gentoo.org as this application is used to keep track of the up-to-date nature of our mirrors.

We would like you to subscribe to the gentoo-mirrors Mailing List by sending an email to gentoo-mirrors+subscribe@lists.gentoo.org, as we send our notifications of updates, releases, and changes in policy to the mirrors. Once again, thanks for the hardware and bandwidth!
