ok, i try to get my hp c5180 to print for hours now, but i can't get it to work. first i thought it has something to do with mdns etc. i tried to merge cups with zeroconf, avahi and slp. my printer is recognized by hp-setup and is installed correctly in cups. but when i try to print, cups says "/usr/libexec/cups/backend/hp failed". looking into /var/log/cups/error.log i can see the following: PID 8307 (/usr/libexec/cups/backend/hp) crashed on signal 11! let me know if i should provide more information. thanks. yes, i tried 3.10.9, too. found out that xsane can't find the printer, too, so no scanning. i think this is a communication problem. but i don't knw where to start.
Did you try both ways mDNS and SLP to configure hplip with hp-setup?
ok, first i merged cups with USE="slp". then i tried with USE="zeroconf", after that with USE="zeroconf avahi". the result is always the same. i can setup my printer, but i can't print. hmm, i looked into the network setting of the printer, too. but there's only an option where you can setup your ip-adress. so, when merging cups with slp, hplip automatically uses slp?! i couln't find an option in hp-setup where you explicitly make use of slp. maybe i did something wrong?
Hm I thought there was some switch for the detection method. Can you try configuring the printer via the cups webinterface. I think here you have the possibility to choose the method.
ok, i did the following: i remerged hplip with qt-support. here i can switch to "advanced options" when setting up a printer. i tried to install the printer with slp and mdns. the difference is that slp gives me a different device_uri than mdns. but printing doesn't work anyway. i am totally perplexed. :) i could try to remerge hplip with "-hpcups hpijs", but that's just a "workaround" i think.

But it is worth a try at least. So we can narrow down the problem a bit more and find out if it is driver related. But I think bot the hpijs and the hpcups driver use the hp backend. I am not 100% sure as the hpcups driver works different.
ok, some strange news again :) i remerged hplip with "-hpcups hpijs" and installed my printer with mdns. when printing a test page from office or somewhere else, i'm getting notified that a print job was started. 2 secons later i'm getting notified that the print job was completed. but the printer doesn't print. when printing a testpage out of cups web interface, the following error occurs: usr/libexec/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed i am attaching a log file. am i freaking out? ;)

i created another attachment. i set LogLevel in cups to debug.
I don't have a clue what is going on here. Maybe there is something wrong with ghostscript. Can you re-emerge ghostscript,cups and hplip, set up the printer and try printing. Else I am out of ideas, I do not have a networked printer so i have no possibility to test anything.
so, here i am again with great news :) after a few days without time i finally managed to get my printer to work. i don't know what was wrong. i unmerged hplip and cups a few times and i didn't work. so i went to another computer and tried to get my printer to work there. i don't know why but when i run hp-check on the new machine it says that snmp is a required dependency. so i remerged hplip with snmp solved the problem. but i don't know why hp-check on my machine wasn't working. so everything is working now. thanks again for the help :)
Hm, taking a look at the use flag descriptions of hplip would have saved us some time. I should update the documentation and add a note about network printers.
yeah, that's a great idea. maybe the use-flag should be named "network" or "networded-printer", that's more meaningful i think.
