"genkernel --bootsplash" hangs at the line "cat ${BOOT_SPLASH_INITRD}
>>${TEMP}/initrd" possibly due to ${BOOT_SPLASH_INITRD} being undefined.

It hangs

This bug is already convered in #23431. BOOT_SPLASH_INITRD is defined in /etc/kernel/settings.

Besides that, there *IS* a bug in the mentioned line; the bootsplash image is added to initrd instead of intitrd.gz (l. 352).

this is a pre 3.x bug
we're not accepting reports on genkernel v < 3
