Description Ben Kohler gentoo-dev 2010-10-29 19:59:27 UTC
I'm noticing a lot of quirks in the bookmark management, but the most critical
and reproducible is seen when trying to move bookmarks from the top level
bookmarks dir to a subdir. The source bookmarks & destination folder both
disappear.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a dozen or more bookmarks in the top-level "Bookmarks" folder. You
can make one then copy/paste-paste-paste to make a bunch real quick.
2. Create a new folder "foo" within "Bookmarks".
3. Select 4 of these bookmarks, click-drag them to "foo"
4. If it works fine, select another 4 and move them.

Actual Results:
"foo" AND the 4 selected bookmarks disappear, usually on the first, second, or
third move. It rarely takes longer than that to see the problem.

Expected Results:
The 4 bookmarks should be moved to the "foo" subdir.

When running krdc from a terminal, I see this output when the folder &
bookmarks disappear:

keditbookmarks(22494) KBookmarkManager::findByAddress:
KBookmarkManager::findByAddress: couldn't find item  "/5"
keditbookmarks(22494) KBookmarkManager::findByAddress:
KBookmarkManager::findByAddress: couldn't find item  "/6"
keditbookmarks(22494) KBookmarkManager::findByAddress:
KBookmarkManager::findByAddress: couldn't find item  "/0/2"

I don't know if this output is related or not, but I see it (with different
numbers on the end) every time the problem happens.

I've also reported this upstream (this bug is mostly a copy/paste of my report there): https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=255611
Comment 1 Ben Kohler gentoo-dev 2010-11-08 19:46:24 UTC
Apparently this is an issue with keditbookmarks itself, not just krdc. I can reproduce it by running keditbookmarks directly. With a fresh user profile, too.
Comment 2 Ben Kohler gentoo-dev 2010-12-03 19:22:24 UTC
Problem still exists on kde-base/keditbookmarks-4.5.4
Comment 3 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2011-04-03 16:01:04 UTC
Any better luck with kde-4.6.1 or 4.6.2 (coming this week, stable candidate)?
Comment 4 Ben Kohler gentoo-dev 2011-04-13 16:00:22 UTC
I finally got a chance to test on kde-base/keditbookmarks-4.6.2, exact same behavior. This is on a brand new kde install, with a fresh user. I can't believe more people haven't run into this, keditbookmarks is unusable for creating folders & organizing your bookmarks in those folders.
Comment 5 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2011-04-17 22:08:31 UTC
After looking at the zoo of open keditbookmarks bugs on b.kde.org, I can only conclude that this piece of code is not really maintained at the moment. No idea what to do here. :(
Comment 6 Tomáš Chvátal (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-04-21 14:36:04 UTC
Not a blocker for stable. It is long time bug in upstream code that looks like noone wants to fix :(
Comment 7 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2011-10-17 19:58:12 UTC
Anyone still seeing this with 4.7.2?
Comment 8 Johannes Huber (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-12-12 20:13:10 UTC
In 4.7.3 keditbookmarks crashes on reproduced steps...
Comment 9 Ben Kohler gentoo-dev 2011-12-31 04:23:15 UTC
Been away from KDE for a while but finally got some new hardware so I figured I'd check in on this. Still happening for me on kde-base/keditbookmarks-4.7.4. It did take me a little longer to reproduce that before (subjectively), but moving 5 bookmarks at a time, it probably took 10-12 moves before they disappeared.

Still a glaring bug, I feel sorry for anyone who's got important bookmarks in a kde app!
Comment 10 Ben Kohler gentoo-dev 2012-02-28 20:16:41 UTC
Tried this on current kde-base/keditbookmarks-4.8.0 today, behavior is even stranger than before, lots of random quirks until it finally crashes with a segfault. See upstream report for updated symptoms & screenshot.
Comment 11 Chris Reffett (RETIRED) gentoo-dev Security 2013-02-14 20:09:11 UTC
Is this still a problem with 4.10?
Comment 12 Ben Kohler gentoo-dev 2013-02-14 20:31:42 UTC
Yes it is. I tested it a couple of days ago after 4.10's release and updated the upstream bug when I saw the same behavior, but I did not update this report.
Comment 13 Michael Palimaka (kensington) gentoo-dev 2013-08-20 13:45:47 UTC
I can still reproduce issues with 4.11
Comment 14 Johannes Huber (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-10-21 10:57:17 UTC
Its reported upstream, tracking since 3 years. Was never a stabilization blocker so makes no sense to keep this open forever.
