Description Stefan Triller 2010-10-28 10:28:08 UTC
In 99% if all cases when I start KDM, it only shows the mouse cursor and background image.

What it doesn't show is the form to enter username and password.

My KDE version is 4.5.2 on ~amd64.

I have tried to re-emerge kdm, mesa (7.7 to 7.9) xorg-server (1.7.7 to 1.9.1) my intel driver (2.12 and 2.13), dbus (1.2.4 and 1.4.0), hal, policykit, polkit and consolekit as in ~amd64.

Problem still persists.

kdm.log and XOrg.log don't provide any error information :( I have also started kdm "by hand" with --debug 0x800 and it looks like it loops while trying to read from a /tmp/X-something socket.

If I use gdm, login is working fine.

If zou need any further information, just ask.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install kde-4.5.2 on a ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" system
2. Start kdm with /etc/init.d/xdm start

Actual Results:
KDM doesn't provide user/password form. it only shows the mouse cursor and background image.

Expected Results:
KDM should show user/password form to make a user login possible.

Temporary solved for me, not sure if its fixed in portage...

Steps for solution:

1. emerge kstyles
2. login into kde with gdm or some other working login-manager
3. go to systemsettings -> System Administration -> Login Screen -> Appearance -> Themed greeter -> set both to Oxygen
4. Under "Theme" choose oxygen air theme for default one -> provide root pass on apply

But why is the oxygen theme missing? I guess it happened during the update from kde 4.5.1 to 4.5.2
Comment 3 Stefan Triller 2010-11-05 06:53:53 UTC
Guess I closed this bug too early...

It worked for one reboot and after that the problem still persists :(

Now after the update, I am using 4.5.3 where the problem also occurs. (4.5.2 was a _fresh_ install though).

With the steps mentioned above I can set the theme, reboot and it works for _one_ login. Afterwards, login window is gone again.

=> switching to gdm for now until problem is solved
Comment 4 Philipp Rosenberger 2010-11-14 15:01:21 UTC
same here, since upgrade to kde-4.5.3 and qt-4.7.1.

kdm starts an only background is shown. the mouscurses shows as ibeam when i move it over the places where the inputfields used to be.

I can even login. kde starts (virtuoso-t is indexing, and the intro sound is playing), but i see only the background from kdm as before.
Comment 6 Philipp Rosenberger 2010-11-15 18:12:37 UTC
I did a 'emerge -evND world' an rebuild the whole system. After this a new kdmrc was installed (etc-update).

My kdm is now working again, but I don't know if it was the building the system or the new kdmrc did the trick.

For me the problem is solved.

Same here, maybe the kdm 4.5.90 merge will help.
Comment 9 forrestfunk81 2010-12-30 01:00:05 UTC
Same here.

Fresh gentoo install, intel graphics, kdm-4.5.4
Comment 10 David Heidelberg (okias) 2010-12-30 21:51:38 UTC
That problem happend to me long time ago (maybe year) on my own laptop, so it's not related to KDM or KDE version. But after long time using xinit to start computer problem disappeared.

That problematic laptop which now doesn't work correct have lastest ~amd64 configuration and Intel graphics (-9999 git). I guess it's problem somewhere in configuration file, but I can't find any error or warning, what could lead to problem.

Here it's a ~x86 install with Intel graphics.

now i'm using gdm, this is not realy what i like.
Comment 12 Aidan Marks 2011-01-02 23:20:19 UTC
kde 4.5.4 / ~amd64 also. intel kms. can login like the other user even though kdm is blank.

kde 4.5.4 / ~amd64 also. intel kms.
I can login but I still only see background
Comment 14 Piotr 2011-01-06 15:32:24 UTC
Same here on ~x86 laptop with Intel graphics (i915) but only on gentoo-sources-2.6.37. If I reboot back to old gentoo-sources-2.6.36-r6 problem disappears.
On my desktop running ~amd64 and nvidia graphics everything is fine.
Comment 15 Emmanuel Andry 2011-01-07 11:01:40 UTC
I should have mentionned it too.
It also occured first when booting 2.6.37. It was fine booting 2.6.36, but when booting back 2.6.37 and 2.6.36 again, the problem also occured.

To summarize, the issue is here now with 2.6.36 AND 2.6.37

Solution (installing xf86-video-intel newer than 2.13.0) fixed the problem for me.
Comment 18 forrestfunk81 2011-01-09 12:19:17 UTC
Works for me too.

I've been struggling with this issue for several weeks. I do find that whenever I build a new kernel and boot from it the first time, the problem is not there, but it is there for every subsequent boot, especially if I re-emerge the software that hasuse kernel_linux. Damned annoying...

I don't see >=xf86-video-intel-2.13.0... is there specific overlay where it is to be found?
Comment 20 forrestfunk81 2011-01-09 13:48:08 UTC
I am using the live ebuild from the x11 overlay

I simply copied the 2.13.0 ebuild to 2.14.0, ran `repoman manifest`, and it built and installed flawlessly. That fixed it so kdm-4.5.4 works with my linux-2.6.37 kernel. So, I can confirm that xf86-video-intel-2.13.0 doesn't work for me with a linux-2.6.37 kernel, and upgrade to xf86-video-intel-2.14.0 fixes it.

I've opened #351211 for intel driver bump request

This fix works for me, too, although I went with the "live" xf86-video-intel-9999 ebuild for the moment. Thanks for the guidance.
Comment 24 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2011-01-09 21:57:11 UTC
OK, since kde-4.5.2 is also only ~arch and this bump to xf86-video-intel-2.14.0 the fixes the issue for all of you we can close this bug now.
