Would it make sense to add a use flag to mplayer ebuild and apply the vaapi patch from the url so that mplayer can have video acceleration support on Intel Atom and ATI cards?

I think it will not be added until it's not official supported by mplayer. Maybe should create another ebuild for application mplayer-vaapi.
I'm waiting for this feature too.

You can use vaapi with mplayer. It is in overlay xhub. See http://bugs.gentoo.org/308871 for additional information.

yep, vaapi support should be merged upstream and i'll happilly make a snapshot supporting it. for now, closing as upstream.
