The problem is given by an external 6in1 flash car reader USB2 certified. I have a custom copiled kernel 2.4.20-gentoo-r8 for AthlonXP. I have a motherboard MSI KT3 with chipset VIA KT333. The system crashes if the device is plugged in, but sometimes it is recognised. If I try to mount a CompactFlash card, the system crases too. It also crashes if I mount it using: mount -t msdos /dev/sda1 /mnt/removable Below there is extra information. Please, let me know if you need more data. Can we have a bit more information about the actual problem please? Does the system lock up, OOPS, ... ?
Soorry, I am new Gentoo user, so I dont now what information to provide. Could you point me to what log files or anything else to report? <quote>Can we have a bit more information about the actual problem please? Does the system lock up, OOPS, ... ?</quote> Yes, the system locks up, so the _only_ way I know is pressing the reset button. Most of the times the system stops responding after some seconds since the device (without card) is plugged in (perhaps 30 to 60 seconds). I give up waiting when the keyboard leds stop working. For instance, if "capslock" key doesnt lit up the led then it is the time to press the reset button.
I don't think you would find much in the logs, as the system probably doesn't have enough time to commit anything to those. Can you please attach your kernel configuration to this bug? Can I suggest toggling the "Preemptive Kernel" option? Can you enable it if it is off and disable it if it is on and see if that yields results?
Created attachment 21212 [details] My actual kernel settings
I have used 'genkernel --config' to configure the kernel. I will recompile with only disabling the 'preemptive' option.
may I also recommend passing "pci=noacpi" on your kernel line in grub/lilo conf file
Any more news on this? Does the problem still exist? Perhaps a kernel upgrade might help.
No more news. He's not coming back. Closed.
