Description Christophe Chabanois 2010-10-08 09:02:57 UTC
When trying to emerge mysql-5.1.51 (currently 5.0.83 installed on my system) on my AMD64, the build fails. It can't find the "zlib compression library" on /usr/lib. It's not searching /usr/lib64.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge =mysql-5.1.51

Actual Results:
checking for zlib compression library... configure: error: headers or binaries were not found in /usr//{include,lib}

you must post `emerge --info` as documented everywhere when filing bugs, as well as the log files the error messages told you to:

why isnt your /usr/lib pointing to /usr/lib64 ?

Never had to do that for more than 5 years using gentoo on my amd64...
Package should not install things in /usr/lib but in /usr/lib64 on amd64. A symlink from /usr/lib to /usr/lib64 is easy but is not the way the things should be done...

The multilib parts of the AMD64 profile you are using explicitly set that lib is the same as lib64.

Fix your symlink, or go and use a different profile.

Thanks for your answer.
My /lib is the same as /lib64 (starting from 2005 profile).
This is not the case of /usr/lib (I have /usr/lib, /usr/lib32 and /usr/lib64 beeing different).

In http://devmanual.gentoo.org/archs/amd64/index.html there is an interesting part about "The multilib-strict Feature".

Did you have a look to http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=111073. It seems to be the same problem I have...
Comment 8 Robin Johnson archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2010-10-15 18:51:52 UTC
The no-symlink profiles no longer exist. The only remaining ones are multilib and no-multilib.

That old bug was from the switchover to getting rid of the no-symlink profiles.

So what we do need to see is detecting users that installed with a 2005 profile that didn't contain the symlinks (like your system), and helping them fixing their systems.
Comment 9 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2010-10-15 20:11:08 UTC
while that's true, i also agree that mysql shouldnt be doing `test -e` checks on files. AC_CHECK_HEADERS() and AC_CHECK_LIB() should be sufficient.
