Description marc gouw 2010-10-06 18:34:33 UTC
The docs state to Flag 'Nouveau (nVidia) cards' (in menuconfig) under 'exclude from being built, however, this results in 'FATAL: error inserting nvidia drivers..... nvidia.ko' no such file. However, removing this flag fixes this problem (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6446748.html#6446748)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install gentoo, and follow 'setting up xorg server' guide
2.
3.

Actual Results:
startx results in:
'FATAL error... nvidia.ko' no such file

Expected Results:
X

nvidia card: 8800gt

The gentoo docs are fantastic, and I just want to do my part (as a new gentoo enthousiast) to keep the information up to date. I hope this helps, and if there is anything i can do, please let me know :) THANKS!

nvidia.ko is the proprietary driver from nVidia corporation. The nouveau driver is the open-source driver featured in the Xorg guide. All that to say . . . you're doing it wrong sorry. :)

Please ask on our forums (http://forums.gentoo.org) if you need help with your kernel configuration, after reading both the Xorg guide and http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml (if you're interested in using the proprietary drivers).

This is not a bug; closing.
