If my X session does not include a running gnome-settings-daemon, Mozilla Firefox 3.x will crash silently whenever a user interface element is clicked. e.g. a firefox menu, bookmark toolbar dropdown, modal dialog e.g. "Empty Spam Folder? OK", plugin UI dialogs, etc. Clicks inside the browser pane, address bar, and buttons on the bookmark toolbar do not cause a crash. I have gone through several iterations of uninstalling gnome-settings-daemon, rebuilding xulrunner and firefox with and without USE="-gnome". Nothing seems to change the crashing behavior. I am currently running x11-wm/awesome-3.4.8 on ~amd64. I use a startx method with .xinitrc which does start gnome-settings-daemon before awesome. However, this problem goes back at least a year for me, before I switched from a standard Gnome session to Awesome. gnome-settings-daemon would crash, Firefox and other apps would go to a default GTK theme, and much earlier versions of Firefox would still crash in this way. Let me know if I can provide any additional information, thanks. Reproducible: Always
You will need to provide a backtrace, I do not run gnome-settings-daemon and have never experienced a crash.
