When I select "Install vmware tools" in the menu, a dialog window appears telling me that vmware cannot find the vmware tools files. The dialog gives me the opportunity to have the files downloaded. 

When I accept this, a second dialog window immediately pops up, asking for confirmation that the cd drive of the guest will be connected with the tools image. (Way too fast for a big download.) When I confirm, nothing happens. 

(Everything keeps working normally, just no image is connected to the cdrom drive.)

Did you install app-emulation/vmware-tools with desired use flags?
