After emergeing shadow-4.0.3-r8, I can't login to my box, neither from console
or ssh. Had to start it in 'single' mode and revert to the shadow-4.0.3-r7 release.

This bug is reproducible.

After upgrading all packages including libc and rebooting the machine, the problem is gone.

Cannot reproduce it here up to now.  Glad you got it resolved, but it would
have been neat to know what caused it.
