Refiling bug 3367. "The default flags in make.conf have changed to i686 flags, so read the manual and actually change the flags in make.conf to the k5/pentium flags. Of course it is debateable what the default should be." I did read the manual, and I did build with make.conf set to both K6, and i586 (at different times of cource), both transition to i686 during the stage2 build. There is no debate unless you tell me you built v1.2 on a K6 or i586 and it came out ok. I did it, it doesn't. The build fails with "illigal- instruction" some time during the compiler boot strap process because there are no i686 instructions. Look for "-m=i686" as the build progresses on the screen, you know the build has gone bad at that point. V1.1A built ok on this machine when set to K6 in make.conf, didn't try i586 since K6 worked. Sorry for not explaining that I did The Right Thing in the first bug report.
Testing the build here. Should finish by tomorrow.
On "emerge system" now. My CFLAGS haven't been reset to i686, though.
Okay, I chrooted and created a stage3-i586-1.2.tbz2 tarball that you can get at http://red.ces.clemson.edu/~grant/stage3-i586-1.2.tbz2. If looks to me like it was created using i586, but if you still get segfaults please reopen this bug.
