Description Alec Warner (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2010-09-11 19:45:42 UTC
We deleted gentoo.org/proj/en/keychain

We should redirect that url to:
http://www.funtoo.org/en/security/keychain/intro/

It would be preferable to do this on the apache side instead of a meta redirect.

I think a jump page would be more appropriate.

Josh, we (infra) aren't getting to this. Could you make a page in CVS that says keychain development is hosted at funtoo (above link). Thx

Why not redirect it to /doc/en/keychain-guide.xml?

We've never done any redirects to external resources. All redirects are, AFAIK, supposed to be for stuff that's still "in-house." Take a look:

$ grep -ir "redirect=" cvs/gentoo/xml/htdocs/doc/en/

I dunno if our XML will even take anything besides relative Gentoo URIs.

Either way, we should not have a landing page that people actually see. Visitors should just be seamlessly redirected to the appropriate resource, like when you try to navigate to http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook.xml

If you REALLY want to, I can re-add /proj/en/keychain/index.xml and stick in an external redirect. I'd prefer to just redirect folks to our own userguide, maybe stick the upstream page at the end as part of a "resources" section.

Are we really getting a ton of keychain /proj/ hits?

Josh,
I respect your opinion on the correct approach and won't interfere.

Yeah, about that . . . both me personally and www@ have been getting some emails in the last coupla weeks about dead links to /proj/en/keychain/. Seems there's an O'Reilly book on Bash or something that references the page. That and a couple of prominent web resources refer to the page, so . . . it looks like either way, I'll have to re-add the page. As a redirect, if nothing else.

In the mean time, I'll add a link to its upstream home to the guide in /doc/en/.

Done and done. Hopefully I didn't screw up our CVS history in the process. Redirect added to /doc/en/keychain.xml.
