I cannot update anymore since gcc 4.4 is required but I can't build it on this older x86 box. You can increase swapsize and try build with MAKEOPTS="-j1" so you will have only one instance of gcc running and thus lower memory usage. Not really a bug.
Somehow during a kernel upgrade, it looks like swap got disabled. I realized this when I noticed swap size was 0 and running 'swapon -a' gave me a function not implemented error. Reconfiguring, rebuilding and rebooting my kernel has restored swap and it looks like the build is running normally. Thanks for the tips.
