Description Anthony Staines 2010-08-29 21:20:31 UTC
Updating an amd64 system, using 'emerge -uavDN @world' with kde installed, repeatedly failed with the message :-
emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy ">=dev-libs/soprano-2.3.70[dbus,raptor,redland,virtuoso]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- dev-libs/soprano-2.4.4 (Change USE: +redland +virtuoso)
(dependency required by "kde-base/nepomuk-4.4.5" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])

The following were done to add these use flags to soprano
1) add them to /etc/portage/package.use
           dev-libs soprano virtuoso redland
This did not work at all.

2) add them to /etc/make.conf
USE="mmx sse sse2 kde qt4 semantic-desktop hal X xulrunner dbus arts redland virtuoso clucene -mono"
       Nor did this

despite setting the USE flags in /etc/make.conf and /etc/portage/package.use as described above

I'm sorry, but you didn't had the necessary use flags for some of your deps and portage reported that and suggested what you needed to do to fix it.
You should never pass use flags in the command line and I can assure you if you set the correct use flags in /etc/make.conf or preferably in /etc/portage/package.use[/*], it will work.

Hi,
First, thanks for your comment, which I appreciate. However I respectfully disagree. I have, on many occasions, added USE flags to either /etc/portage/package.use or to /etc/make.conf, and this has always worked. I've reported this as a bug because the usual fix did not work. What did work was adding the USE flags directly on the command line, but I don't know why.
I suspect that soprano is using some slight variation on the usual process to hunt out the relevant libs, and this is the source of the difficulty. In any event putting USE flags on the command line fixed it for me, and might fix it for some other poor soul.
Thanks again,
Anthony

In that case let's try to find out if this is really a bug.

Can you please post the output of emerge -uDavN @world with the respective use flags set in /etc/make.conf, /etc/portage/package.use[/*] and in the command line?

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Please paste the following output:

grep soprano /etc/portage/package.use
grep soprano /etc/portage/package.use/*

Also double check the package.unmask file you're using as it seems to be missing some entries.
