Description Randy Tupas 2010-08-29 19:36:55 UTC
After upgrading to dev-libs/glib-2.25.14 from the gnome-overlay, the ebuild message states:
 * You must rebuild gobject-introspection so that the installed
 * typelibs and girs are regenerated for the new APIs in glib

Attempts to rebuild dev-libs/gobject-introspection-0.9.3 fail with:

make[2]: Entering directory `/var/tmp/portage/dev-libs/gobject-introspection-0.9.3/work/gobject-introspection-0.9.3/gir'
  GISCAN GLib-2.0.gir

(GLib-2.0:18875): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: specified class size for type `DConfSettingsBackend' is smaller than the parent type's `GSettingsBackend' class size

(GLib-2.0:18875): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed

(GLib-2.0:18875): GLib-GIO-WARNING **: Tried to register an extension of the type (null) to extension point gsettings-backend. Expected type is GObject.
  GISCAN GObject-2.0.gir

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade to dev-libs/glib-2.25.14
2. Attempt to rebuild dev-libs/gobject-introspection-0.9.3
3. Compile fails with error: DConfSettingsBackend is smaller than the parent type's GSettingsBackend ...

Actual Results:
dev-libs/gobject-introspection-0.9.3 compile fails with above error.

Expected Results:
dev-libs/gobject-introspection-0.9.3 builds without error

Attempts to rebuild dconf and gtk+ fail with the same error. Downgraded to glib-2.25.11 allows packages to build.

Tried to upgrade to glib-2.25.12 to build the new dconf-0.5 results in failure with the same error above. Seems version 2.25.12 of glib introduced an error.

Comment 4 Tiago Batista 2010-09-03 09:59:56 UTC
I found a workaround...

I did upgrade dconf to 0.9.5, but I do not know if this is required. If it is, ask me for the ebuild.

Note that I have the introspection use flag on my make.conf

1 USE="-introspection" emerge dconf
2 emerge gobject-introspection
3 emerge dconf

I will now emerge a few other packages that were failing with this error, in the hope that this fixes the problem!
Comment 5 Randy Tupas 2010-09-04 03:35:59 UTC
The latest version of gnome-base/dconf I can find in the overlays is 0.5. Please send me the ebuild for dconf-0.9.5. BTW, I have dconf-0.4.2 currently installed with "introspection" enabled.
Comment 6 Tiago Batista 2010-09-04 07:51:41 UTC
this is what I get for not re-reading my posts! 0.9.5 was a mix between dconf's version and GObject-introspection's... Forget that number!

I cant find the dconf-0.5 on the gnome overlay, so I wrote an ebuild for it. What overlay are you using?

Anyway... Back to the bug!

After upgrading to dev-libs/gobject-introspection-0.9.3, all the packages that use introspection broke. I had to rebuild all of them in order to regenerate all the gir files. The breakage had something to do vith version 1.0 vs verion 1.1 of the gir, but I did not take any notes.
Comment 7 Arun Raghavan (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-09-05 11:59:03 UTC
I just pushed 0.5 to tree. It does not fix the problem. Some API/ABI breakage in glib was b0rking things. To expand on Tiago's solution:

(assuming you're running gobject-introspection -.9.3)
1. USE=-introspection emerge dconf
2. USE=introspection emerge dconf
3. emerge gobject-introspection
...

should fix your problems. Marking RESO WONTFIX since this kind of breakage is inevitable when you're running masked GNOME packages that are known to be in flux. Please reopen if the problem is not fixed for you by the steps mentioned above.
Comment 8 Randy Tupas 2010-09-05 18:50:36 UTC
Thanks Tiago and Arun! After upgrading to glib-2.25.14, the workaround with dconf fixed the compile errors. Enjoying the latest gnome-shell :-) Thanks for all of your hard work!
