Hi, Fontconfig 2.2.1 was installed and working fine. After remerging it (fontconfig 2.2.1) the default Gnome system font "Sans" (which seems to be an alias in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf ?) is replaced by a small "CartWright" font. The result is that everything is unreadable and I have to change all gnome apps preferences manually to a readable Sans-serif font (cannot change the gdm user login font as I don't know where to change it). I have run fc-cache -vf , didn't change anything. The CartWright font doesn't show up in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf All other fonts are working properly.
After I unmerge sharefonts and freefonts I finaly get a acceptable readable system font. If I remerge these 2 packages, the problem happens again. So it looks like fontconfig is messing things up ? or is it Gnome ?
attach your fonts.conf please and your user ~/.fonts.conf if it exists

Sorry for no reply here, i think i forgot submit an earlier comment. I don't see anything wrong here, all major font dirs are covered by fontconfig. All that I can think of is that you removed all good fonts somehow. Try emerging ttf-bitstream-vera, it should provide a good default font for the sans alias.
no reply.. sorry i didn't reply sooner.
