Most pptp users always cry for the lack of pptpclient support on installation cds of other distribution. Since long LiveCDs of Gentoo have carried pptp support with them, but never being mentioned. I myself had rejected idea of installing Gentoo from stage1 for lack of pptp option. For pptpclient setup, 1> the ethernet configuration is done as told in the handbook 2> edit /etc/ppp/pap-secrets or chap-secrets file. 3> edit /etc/ppp/options.pptp as per requirement 4> give command pptp <server-ip> to connect (along with special parameters needed which could not be set up in options.pptp file. Thats all.. :) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Is http://emu.gentoo.org/~swift/configure_network.html#doc_chap3_sect4 what you are looking for? I'm not used to dealing with PPTP (not since '99) but don't want to publicize wrong information...
Created attachment 20743 [details, diff] Patch to hb-install-network.xml This is the current patch. I need some review from someone with pptp experience if the patch is sufficient or if more information is required (i.e. what should be in chap-secrets, how to know when to use pap or chap -- I know, ISP choice, what hardware tests should be done to verify that the modem works etc.)
Hrm, the patch is wrong... ppptp isn't for dial-in. Can you explain me a bit more about ppptp (when is it used, what do you need etc.)?
Umm I am bit consfused. The link you showed me says exactly what I have wrote. Well there is no harm to keep pap and chap secrets as duplicates of each other. PPTP is kind of dial in, only thing is that you dial to your local server. Harware interface is different, I am not sure what are you asking exacytly. pptpclient.sourceforge.net has all information one needs
The patch reads "or <c>pptp</c> (for dial-in)." which would make people think that it is for modem users (which it isn't). I'll take a look at ppptp.sf.net, but that can take a while. What I am actually looking for is an explanation on what ppptp does, as it's difficult to add support for it in the docs without knowing it :) Regarding the hardware, what does one need? Is it still just a network interface, or is it more like a modem? Hrm... I should shut up and check the website :)
Okay, I've just s/dial-in/pptp/ and committed.
