sci-geosciences/mkgmap, a Java commandline tool for compiling maps for Garmin GPS devices has advanced several steps above what is in portage right now.  Just renaming the old file (1200) to the latest version (1667) has worked fine for me on amd64.

Latest version added. Actually i will try to check it once a month in avg as they tag it as stable once here and there.
