what version of portage are using? and gcc? and are you using the Nvidias openGL
or the xfree one?

I had the same problem, it turns out that source gets "patched" after unpacking
(check out src_unpack() in the ebuild). After commenting out the "patch"
everything worked for me. The comment over the patch reads: <p>
