At the moment portage is lacking a rescue package what other arch have (sys-apps/portage/files/portage-rescue-<ver>-<arch>.tbz2). I would have needed that when my system went berserk with portage-2.0.49-r16. Hopefully, I was able to rescue it with help from irc and alien rescue tar ball. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
can anyone on amd64 build one and commit it to the portage dir on gentoo-x86, I don't think anyone on dev-portage has direct access to a AMD64 box.
forgot to say that a rescue tarball is just a renamed .tbz2 package created with quickpkg or emerge -B

brad_mssw also committed a rescue tarball for amd64, so it's fixed.
