At the moment portage is lacking a rescue package what other arch have 
(sys-apps/portage/files/portage-rescue-<ver>-<arch>.tbz2). 
 
I would have needed that when my system went berserk with portage-2.0.49-r16. 
Hopefully, I was able to rescue it with help from irc and alien rescue tar 
ball.

can anyone on amd64 build one and commit it to the portage dir on gentoo-x86, I don't think anyone on dev-portage has direct access to a AMD64 box.

forgot to say that a rescue tarball is just a renamed .tbz2 package created with quickpkg or emerge -B

A Rescue package for AMD64

Package has been made by 'quickpkg =portage-2.0.49-r15', at amd64 host,
with Gentoo Base System version 1.4.3.10.

after that I untarred it, and changed 
make.conf.orig to make.conf, 
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" to CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
and tarred it again.

MD5 sum for package is:
d18c4112863b33b60044d6d649d03703 *portage-rescue-2.0.49-r15-amd64.tbz2

Use it at your own risk, this was my first time when I generated a rescue
packege for portage.

brad_mssw also committed a rescue tarball for amd64, so it's fixed.
