desktop.xml said the opposite and I have been told on #gentoo-dev that you should re-emerge nvidia-kernel after a kernel recompile. If it turns out it is the other way around, desktop.xml will have to be updated accordingly. Being a Matrox G-* fan, I need someone with nvidia experience to review. Thanks.

I've always heard that kernel _re_compilations don't require a recompilation of the nvidia-kernel. I wouldn't know why it would either. When a new kernel is compiled that changes the situation. I deliberately don't buy NVidia graphical cards so I'm not 100% confident either. I do agree that the alsa-guide shouldn't talk about the nvidia kernel...
