Description Emil Wojak 2010-07-15 10:14:23 UTC
After upgrading
x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.18_pre20100211-r1 --> 2.4.20
media-libs/mesa-7.7.1 --> 7.8.2

my compiz screen did not refresh properly, especially when scrolling in Firefox, or in gnome-terminal. Often even simple output of ls command was incomplete, ie. some lines were missing or were scrambled. Switching windows made the contents to be redrawn correctly. Meanwhile the following message was repeated a few times in dmesg:
[drm:i915_gem_madvise_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempted i915_gem_madvise_ioctl() on a pinned object

I didn't notice any relevant messages in Xorg.log.
The problem occurred on both gentoo-sources-2.6.32 and 2.6.34.

Downgrading libdrm (and mesa because of dependency) and (following libdrm's postinst message) rebuilding x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.6 and x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.9.1 fixed the problem.

Ensure that xorg-server, mesa and xf86-video-intel were built against the same version of libdrm, and try again.
Comment 2 Emil Wojak 2010-07-15 11:03:38 UTC
I did. Each time I changed version of libdrm, I rebuilt mesa, xorg-server and xf86-video-intel.

Comment 3 Ragas 2010-07-15 16:58:41 UTC
I've got the same Problem on my machine.
Comment 4 Ragas 2010-07-15 17:26:04 UTC
Also I don't get those error messages.
I just tried upgrading libdrm to 2.4.21 but the Problem consists.

Does it happen both with and without KMS?
You could try a newer xf86-video-intel too (but then you must use KMS)

I've same problem and fixed it by downgrade'ing mesa only.

Now I have:
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.12.0
x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.21
media-libs/mesa-7.7.1

I have to mention that I have "~x86" for libdrm and xf86-video-intel. Downgrade'ing to stable versions:
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.9.1
x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.20-r1
did not helped me.

AFAIK it is mesa problem, not libdrm.

I've also upgraded to xf86-video-intel-2.10.0-r1 and the problem persisted.

I didn't test running without KMS but since it's deprecated it shouldn't matter that much.

I can confirm this.

The same worked for me. A friend of mine just got into the same problem and downgrading mesa helped her as well.
So I guess media-libs/mesa-7.8.2 should be marked unstable.

7.8.2 never works for me and downgrade it does fix this.
is it to late to mark it unstable?
Comment 11 Faustus 2010-11-11 12:44:24 UTC
I can confirm this bug.

xf86-video-intel 2.9.1
xorg-server 1.7.6 / 1.7.7-r1 (bug appears in both)
KMS disabled / enabled (bug appears in both configurations)
Compiz - latest versions in portage ATM (0.8.4 / 0.8.6)
mesa 7.8.2 (downgrade to 7.7.1 fixes the issue)

Perhaps mesa 7.8.2 should be marked unstable?

Relevant forum thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6482609.html

Copy-paste from my post:

Selecting "Fix screen updates in XGL with fglrx" in Compiz settings (Workarounds) also kind of fixes it, but then Compiz becomes terribly slow.

Note that the problem probably exists even in mesa-7.7.1 - I remember experiencing some of the effects in VTE previously, but it was very rare (running a console program - it looks stuck, but actually its output just didn't cause a window refresh event).
Comment 12 Faustus 2010-11-11 12:49:28 UTC
Forgot to add: I don't have the message
  [drm:i915_gem_madvise_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempted i915_gem_madvise_ioctl() on a
pinned object
in dmesg output, as described by the submitter.
Comment 13 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2010-11-28 21:45:15 UTC
Please try again with mesa-7.9
Comment 14 bugsgentoo 2010-11-30 09:43:12 UTC
I've been using mesa-7.9 since it's on the overlay, and never get the problem anymore.
Comment 15 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2011-01-12 00:25:13 UTC
Marking as fixed per comment 14. Please reopen if you can still see this issue with mesa-7.10.
