I had the same problem; re-emerging media-fonts/gnu-gs-fonts-std fixed it.

Don't have the time to investigate it further myself, but it seems to me that part of the most recent xorg update did something with the font paths.

May be this could help ...

Fix confirmed. Thanks. Should this be a bug against media-fonts/gnu-gs-fonts-std ?

libX11-1.3.* isn't in the tree anymore. Is this still a bug with 1.4.*?
Comment 7 Gary E. Miller 2011-08-15 17:25:05 UTC
No way for me to test. Re-emerging media-fonts/gnu-gs-fonts-std fixed the problem for me and no way to undo that.
Comment 8 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2012-01-27 21:39:19 UTC
media-fonts/gnu-gs-fonts-std is also lastrited. Begone foul bug.
