Description ta2002 2010-07-08 10:50:10 UTC
Installed openoffice-bin

Any time I try to run any of the programs (I am using the command line so I get SOME output), I see:

$ oocalc

** (soffice:27404): WARNING **: unable to get gail version number
GC Warning: Repeated allocation of very large block (appr. size 262144000):
        May lead to memory leak and poor performance.
GC Warning: Repeated allocation of very large block (appr. size 1048576000):
        May lead to memory leak and poor performance.

Needless to say, that immediately brings the system to a crawl consuming all (several gigabytes) of the memory and swap.

I installed openoffice as opposed to openoffice-bin and suddenly I am getting the same thing, and now openoffice-bin won't work either. openoffice package starts up to the splash screen, with no errors on console. openoffice-bin package gets the error about gail, but not the other ones.

please paste the output of:

emerge -pv openoffice openoffice-bin

OK.

# emerge -pv openoffice-bin

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Did you try to use 3.2.1?
Comment 5 ta2002 2010-11-26 13:01:25 UTC
It started working after completely deleting (upon suggestion) the OpenOffice subdirectory in my home directory. No idea what caused it, but apparently enough other people have encountered it that this is a known workaround.
