this isn't x86 specific. i'm hitting it too.
This is also happening for me, trying to install app-editors/vim-core-6.2-r4 and being unable to download vim-6.2.098-patches.tar.bz2 on Gentoo Linux 1.4.
I've re-uploaded all current vim sources. Somehow distfiles-local was wiped out. Beats me.
