Almost all ft-dependent packages want 2.0.x while i built everything with 2.1.0
_WITHOUT PROBLEMS_ ( i changed makefiles :-)). 2.1.0 includes many enhancements
so i would suggest to change dependencies inside affected ebuilds (e.g.
gnome-media 2) as followed:
=freetype-2.0.* --> >=freetype-2.0.

btw: if some users still have problems you can leave ft2.1.0 masked anyway
