Description Ferry 2010-06-25 14:01:09 UTC
I know it's quite soon to post this already, as it's just released today, but many people have issues with the intel drivers stability at the moment, so many will consider it quite urgent (at least I do :)). For the last past weeks it hasn't been really stable, using 2 monitors made me have no issues, but after some recent gnome updates bugs seem to be triggered much more often (as in I usually can't work an hour w/o lockup) and downgrading to 2.10 doesn't help and 2.9 doesn't compile any more.

It says some things are fixed:

major improvements
xf86-video-intel 2.12.0:
* Many performance improvements targeting i915/i945/G33/Pineview graphics chipset.
* Improved Xvmc and overlay, adding GEM support.
* Fixes for page-flipping and other DRI2-handling bugs.
mesa 7.8.2:
* Various i965 and i915 driver fixes.
kernel 2.6.34:
* Unstable framebuffer compression is now disabled on 915GM and 945GM.
* Ironlake interrupt wedging fixed.
* Tiling bugs on 915-945 fixed.
* Removed unreliable ACPI LID state-based laptop display setup.
* Memory self-refresh mode implemented on 915-945 for power saving.
Intel hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding for Intel® HD Graphics. (detail, requiring 2.6.35-ish kernel)

I just copied xf86-video-intel-2.11.0 to 2.12.0 and it merges (couldn't find any filepaths in there, probably autogenerated?).

Do have issues with multiple monitors now.

PS, I'd like to see fictional things kill things :)

FYI, for those that want to test already (but as stated, I have issues with more than 1 monitor, then again, not sure if anything needs to be changed in the ebuild) you can run the following (as root):

cd /usr/portage/x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel; cp xf86-video-intel-2.11.0.ebuild xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.ebuild; ebuild /usr/portage/x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel/xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.ebuild manifest; emerge -1 xf86-video-intel

This should update it. One warning, I'm not sure what will happen once the official ebuild gets released, that ebuild will overwrite this one, but portage will probably not notice it's an update. So at that time you might have to rebuild it again (just run emerge -1 xf86-video-intel). I don't foresee any other issues with this, but as stated, I'm no ebuild dev and I might just be horribly wrong :). Thus no warranties, use at your own risk and if it fries your kittens or makes your laptop explode it's not my fault :).

So far I haven't had any lock-ups any more though, which for me is better than being able to use multiple monitors but get frequent freezes/lockups (sometimes I could switch to console, other times not).

I'm on a HP/Compaq nc6320 laptop.
