its probably the (recursive) 'Requires' fields of libnotify.pc that were not met; one case I can imagine is: libnotify -> gtk+ -> cairo -> libpng12 / libpng14 if you had libpng12 as Requires but libpng-1.4 installed this would very likely fail.
