I'm running xfce-base/xfce4-panel-4.6.2 and x11-wm/openbox-3.4.11.1 on two amd64 machines. On both of them, if a "modal" (popup that stays on top of the window, some let you click buttons behind the popup, the bug happens in either case) window is opened in a program, I can't select the program's window from the panel. It will just cause the bar on the panel representing the window to start glowing from blue to white. Steps to reproduce: 1. $ X & 2. $ export DISPLAY=:0 3. $ openbox & 4. $ xfce4-panel & 5. Open any program with a window other than Firefox, keep it unminimized (I tested with gnome-terminal and with pcmanfm) 6. Open Firefox, type the following in the address bar: javascript:alert("HI") 7. Select the window other program you opened. 8. Select Firefox Expected results: The Firefox window should be sent to the foreground of the desktop. Actual Results: Step 8 will not cause Firefox to be the foreground window, instead the Firefox bar on the panel will start glowing, and if you have the Firefox window visible, you'll notice that alert popupbox is flashing. See http://i.imgur.com/DVoPJ.png If you have only multiple Firefox windows open, the window switching works fine. Similarly, if you minimize all programs besides Firefox, it will also work fine. Note that this isn't a Firefox issue; anything that opens a modal window will cause the bug. Try opening an about window in any program instead of alertbox in firefox, or try the search box in gedit. Maybe this has something to do with it, almost every time a window is opened in anything (be it a main window of a program, or a popup box), xfce4-panel outputs this message: (xfce4-panel:23433): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE

I'm testing with other combinations of window managers and panels. These will all be done on PC2. My previous post has PC2's emerge --info. I already tested xfce4-panel + metacity, and can confirm the problem doesn't happen in that case.
Clearly seems to be some interop problem in openbox or xfce4-panel. xfce4-panel is for the xfce desktop, if you want it to support something else, be prepared to write a patch and submit to upstream then come back here :)
