Description Bernhard Schmidt 2003-10-31 17:29:16 UTC
New portage mirror in Germany (rsync)

Machine name: majestix.birkenwald.de
IPv4: 195.226.186.116
IPv6: 2001:7b0:11ff:1::1:1

Since the one and only IPv6 portage mirror in rsync.de.gentoo.org
(uni-muenster.de) is quite slow sometimes I'd like to apply for my server to be
added to the AAAA-records of rsync.de.gentoo.org.

IPv4 address added for the mirror admins to check the freshness of the system,
please do only add the IPv6 address if possible.

Synced at *:00 and *:30 to rsync1.de.gentoo.org

10Mbit IPv6 pipe, P4 1.7Ghz with 512MB RAM, 3ware EscalaRAID with 60GB RAID-1,
running (of course) Gentoo. 20 users max.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

Will you be able to sync with rsync1.us via an IPv4 address? I don't
think we have the ability to let v6 addresses sync with rsync1, but
we are confirming that.
Comment 2 Bernhard Schmidt 2003-11-01 17:36:44 UTC
That would be no problem, the machine has a decent v4 connectivity and can
of course sync through v4.
Comment 3 Peter Penkala gentoo-dev 2003-11-01 17:44:15 UTC
OK, I've added 195.226.186.116 to the access list for rsync1.us.gentoo.org.
If you want a different IP, just let me know. You should be able to sync

with rsync1.us withing 30 minutes. Please update your rsync cron jobs to

point to rsync1.us.gentoo.org and post back here when you've done so. I'll
monitor the server for a couple days to make sure things are working fine.

Thanks.

The sync at 3am CET was successfully done with rsync1.us.gentoo.org, the
machine should be ready from my point of view.

Our box at Indiana Univ. should be on ipv6 shortly and you could mirror off
of that once it is setup. Our ipv6 connections to europe are pretty nice
from here, so it might be better for you to switch. I'll keep you posted,
it could be as soon as this week.

Cheers!

2001:7b0:11ff:1::1:1 has only 7 parts. Does that translate to
2001:07b0:11ff:0001:0000:0001:0001:0000 ?
Comment 7 Bernhard Schmidt 2003-11-04 23:18:13 UTC
Nopes, it has 6 parts, the full address looks like that

2001:7b0:11ff:1::1:1
-> 2001:07b0:11ff:0001:0000:0000:0001:0001

(eight parts consisting of 16bit, leading '0' can be stripped, as well as
one or more consecutive parts can be replaced by '::' (only once!!)), but
the usual nameservers should understand the first form as well.
Comment 8 Peter Penkala gentoo-dev 2003-11-05 15:52:09 UTC
Ah, OK. I misinterpreted the :: to indicate zero's between the colons.
Don't work with IPv6 much, so it doesn't stick with me.

I've added just the IPv6 address into the .de rotation. I'm assuming
you didn't want it available in the europe rotation. This mirror is
rsync17.de. Please update the motd file to include that information.

Also, I've subscribed <berni@birkenwald.de> to our gentoo-mirrors mailing
list (low volume). This list is used to discuss mirror-related issues.

Thanks for supporting Gentoo.

Thanks, I just had the first successful testers...

The europe rotation would be no problem, but since there is no mirror yet
and since rsync chooses IPv6 first there should be some more available before
introducing AAAA records in .europe.
