Description T-Dawg 2010-06-14 14:09:51 UTC
There is currently a bug in firefox upstream where the "open with" dialog box will not appear for application links being sent as application/octet-stream. Instead of dropping back to examining the file extension and using the appropriate helper application, it simply defaults to what it is supposed to do for octet-streams and only provide a "save as" or "cancel" dialog box.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.visit https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=327323 and click on "testdownload" link in the attachements (or direct link: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=334071)

Actual Results:
A "save or cancel" dialog box pops up.

Expected Results:
A "open with application" box should appear instead.

The bug at mozilla is located here:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=327323

Mozilla has acknowledged it is a problem (since 2006!) and will be fixed but that scheduled launch will be for mozilla 1.9.3, which is firefox 3.7.

I use zimbra a lot here at work and this bug surfaces often with email attachments, its very annoying. The rest of the machines in my company are running non-gentoo systems where I have compiled firefox 3.6.3 myself using two patches I created (read below) that have fixed this issue and have been running solid for several months now.

I realize this is an upstream bug that has already been "fixed" but its release date is in my opinion unacceptably too far away. I think many gentoo users would benefit and appreciate an intermediate fix in the meantime.

Thank you for your considerations,
  Tyler

This has been resolved upstream as of firefox version 3.6.11 and xulrunner 1.9.11.
