I have a local USB-Printer, in the past I could use it without problems. It is identified by hal: root@condor:/root(32)# lshal | grep -i print info.product = 'USB Printer Interface' (string) usb.product = 'USB Printer Interface' (string) udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_922_19_09051913382950_if0_printer_09051913382950' info.capabilities = {'printer'} (string list) info.category = 'printer' (string) info.interfaces = {'org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Printer'} (string list) info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_922_19_09051913382950_if0_printer_09051913382950' (string) org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Printer.method_argnames = {'make model'} (string list) org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Printer.method_execpaths = {'hal_lpadmin --configure'} (string list) org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Printer.method_names = {'Configure'} (string list) org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Printer.method_signatures = {'ss'} (string list) printer.commandset = {' '} (string list) printer.description = 'DYMO LabelWriter 400' (string) printer.device = '/dev/usb/lp0' (string) printer.originating_device = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_922_19_09051913382950_if0' (string) printer.product = 'LabelWriter 400' (string) printer.serial = '09051913382950' (string) printer.vendor = 'DYMO' (string) It was known to cups as: hal:///org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_922_19_09051913382950_if0_printer_09051913382950 So it was shown about the cups web interface. If I now try to print I find in /var/log/cups/error_log Unable to execute /usr/libexec/cups/backend/hal: No such file or directory Indeed there is no hal file in the /usr/libexec/cups/backend/ directory. So I deleted the the printer in the web interface and tried to reinstall the printer. But the web interface offers me as local printers only: Drucker hinzufügen Lokale Drucker: SCSI-Drucker (Unknown) HP Printer (HPLIP) (Unknown) Entdeckte Netzwerkdrucker: Andere Netzwerkdrucker: Windows Printer via SAMBA (Unknown) ... but no printers at the usb or parallel Interface. What should I do? same problem! after upgrade to cups 1.4.4 no print in my printer usb
Created attachment 245920 [details, diff] usb-backend-both-usblp-and-libusb.dpatch after apply this patch from DEBIAN, solve the problem see bug http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=292543 cups (1.4.1-4) unstable; urgency=low [ Till Kamppeter ] * debian/patches/usb-backend-both-usblp-and-libusb.dpatch: Make the USB backend supporting both printer access via libusb and via the usblp kernel module. Make it also printing via libusb if the URI for the queue was generated via usblp and vice versa. This should solve most USB printing problems which occured on the transition to CUPS 1.4.x (LP: #420015, LP: #436495; Closes: #546558, #545288, #545453).
As far as I know, this problem is fixed for a long time: The cups ebuild has a "usb" USE flag. If it is set, you get the "newstyle" (cups 1.4) USB handling. If you emerge with USE="-usb", you should get the oldstyle (cups 1.3) USB handling, and everything should work as it did with earlier cups versions. At least, this did the trick for me: Changed to "-usb", all problems solved, printer works fine for months now...
This is wanted behaviour and we will address it through a news item as soon as we get CUPS 1.4 stable in Gentoo. Thanks for your patience.
