It seems that the test suite assumes too much. Also, connecting to the "live" MySQL socket in a test suite isn't the best idea.

The test suite assumes that it can clobber your database named "test". I've restricted tests in sphinx 0.9.9 and added a revision 0.9.9-r1 which installs the test files in the filesystem and provides instructions on where to find them.
