The attached build log doesn't show anything about an error for "broken vi". Instead it shows the error for Bug 319937: slocal.c:1575:9: error: incompatible types when assigning to type ‘datum’ from type ‘int’ However, ignoring this, I installed elvis and used that as the target of by vi link and attempted to emerge nmh 1.3-r1 and nmh 1.3 with the ebuild fixing Bug 252150 Bug 294762 and Bug 319937 ( http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=240761&action=view ) I was able to install nmh cleanly without any hangs. So absent any further information, I am inclined to recommend WORKSFORME or DUPLICATE (of Bug 319937) depending on whether you believe the summary or the attached build log.
nmh was removed from portage, therefore closing as wontfix for now. new ebuilds should go in bug 336057.
