the people from flashrom.org released flashrom 0.9.2 some days ago.
If you are using flashrom 0.9.1 from portage and need help from the developers (many people do that), they always tell to use the svn version or 0.9.2 because 0.9.1 is ancient (very very ancient).
They did not yet create a release tarball yet but svn rev 1000 is 0.9.2:

I know gentoo doesn't like it, but an svn ebuild would be nice too for this program.

Will wait for a release tarball for the reasons you already stated...
They should release more often if they want distributions to carry newer code.

flashrom-0.9.2 is in gentoo-x86 now.
